Week 12 Veggie List & Ideas

Basket of Ripe Raspberries
First Raspberries of the Season!
Already we’re almost 3 months into the 2011 veggie season of our CSA farm share. The beginning of summer kicks off the season for raspberries, basil, potatoes, and summer squash, all of which we received for the first time today. We’ve already eaten all the raspberries and are eagerly awaiting the first local apricots and plums in the not-too-distant future.

After making a fabulous cooked cabbage recipe last week (from a cookbook, I’ll share it as soon as I can!), I’m game for experimenting with slow cooking the leftover purple cabbage. Summer squash, my favorite veggie, begs the question: to simply steam or to cook more elaborately with garlic? We are trying to figure out the best use for the wonderfully fragrant basil, and found a recipe to combine it with the parsley and broccoli--yum! I do love summer.

This week’s veggies:

Basil
Broccoli
Carrots (several colors)
Garlic
Kale
Lettuce
Fresh onions
Parsley
Red potatoes
Radicchio
Salad mix
Summer squash
Strawberries
Raspberries

Leftovers: Purple cabbage, lettuce, radishes, green garlic, a few scallions, grape tomatoes from the market.

Ideas:

Salad: salad mix, lettuce, radish, radicchio, cabbage, scallions, grape tomatoes from market, pickled tomatoes from winter share

Simply steam: summer squash?

Lemony Baked Broccoli (with basil, parsley, tomato, and mozzarella)

Braised Red Cabbage (in slow-cooker)

Parsley or Rosemary Potatoes (we have rosemary plants in the yard)

At last: Strawberry Shortcake!
